The demonstration was organized to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the New York Agreement and to express KNPB’s position regarding the agreement, which the organization argues did not involve Papuan representatives in the process concerning the political issues surrounding Papua.
During the protest, participants delivered a number of demands and political views concerning the history of the New York Agreement and the current situation in Papua.
The action carried the theme “Papua Under Military Emergency and Humanitarian Crisis” and was reportedly held simultaneously in several cities.
The KNPB Meepago Region used the occasion to express its views on political, security, and humanitarian issues in Papua. Protesters gathered around Karang Market in Nabire and delivered speeches concerning their interpretation of Papua’s political history and the impact of ongoing conflicts in several areas.
It should be noted that statements concerning the history and political status of Papua expressed during the demonstration represent the views and position of KNPB. These views should be distinguished from established historical facts and from the official positions of the Indonesian government and other parties involved in the New York Agreement.
The demonstration was also part of the broader democratic dynamics in Papua, where members of the public express political opinions and aspirations in public spaces.
