Koops TNI Habema Recovers Body of PT AMA Air Pilot in Yahukimo, Launches Special Rescue and Tactical Security Operation

YAHUKIMO, OLEMAH.COM – The Indonesian Armed Forces' Habema Joint Operational Command (Koops TNI Habema) has successfully recovered the body of Captain Nicholas F. Goselin, the pilot of PT AMA Air aircraft PK-RCY, following a deadly shooting incident at Ipdeheik Airstrip, Balinggama Village, Sobaham District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, on Friday (July 3, 2026).

The recovery operation was carried out alongside an ongoing security mission to locate and pursue those responsible for the shooting and the burning of the aircraft.

Special Rapid Response Operation

Following reports of the attack, Koops TNI Habema immediately launched a Special Rapid Response Operation aimed at securing Ipdeheik Airstrip, a strategic location for humanitarian access and emergency response.

The operation also included a Tactical Search and Rescue (SAR) mission to recover the victim, secure the surrounding area, and ensure the safety of civilians living nearby.

A total of 10 Koops TNI Habema personnel, supported by two Caracal helicopters, participated in the mission. Military officials stated that the operation was conducted swiftly, carefully, and in a coordinated manner due to the challenging mountainous terrain.

Challenging Mountain Conditions

The mission faced significant logistical challenges because Sobaham District is located in one of Papua Highlands' most remote mountainous regions, where unpredictable weather, dense fog, and limited transportation infrastructure often hamper emergency operations.

Despite these obstacles, security forces successfully secured the airstrip and evacuated Captain Nicholas F. Goselin from the scene.

Security Operation Continues

Following the evacuation, Koops TNI Habema confirmed that military operations in the area remain ongoing.

Security personnel continue conducting patrols and search operations in areas believed to be escape routes used by the attackers while strengthening security around Ipdeheik Airstrip and nearby communities to prevent further disturbances.

Protecting Humanitarian Air Services

Military officials emphasized that securing remote airstrips remains a top priority, as pioneer aviation services are essential for communities throughout Papua Highlands.

Aircraft serving isolated districts transport food supplies, medicine, medical personnel, teachers, and other essential humanitarian services to areas inaccessible by road.

Koops TNI Habema reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the Indonesian National Police, local governments, and other stakeholders to maintain security and ensure humanitarian flights can safely resume.

Authorities also stated that investigations into the incident are continuing, including evidence collection and efforts to identify those responsible for the attack.
