Yahukimo Regent Expresses Deep Condolences Over the Death of AMA Pilot in Sobaham District

Yahukimo, Olemah.com– Yahukimo Regent Didimus Yahuli, S.H., M.H., held a press conference on Friday following the death of Captain Nicholas F. Goselin, a pilot with Associated Mission Aviation (AMA), who lost his life in a tragic incident in Balinggama Village, Sobaham District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands Province.

Speaking to the media, Regent Didimus Yahuli expressed his deepest condolences over the loss of a humanitarian pilot who had dedicated his service to remote communities across Yahukimo.

"On behalf of the Yahukimo Regency Government and all the people of Yahukimo, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Captain Nicholas. He was a civilian pilot who faithfully served remote communities throughout Yahukimo by providing essential humanitarian air transportation," the Regent said.

The Regent strongly condemned the act of violence that resulted in Captain Nicholas's death, describing it as a profound loss not only for the pilot's family and the AMA organization but also for the people of Yahukimo who depended on AMA's humanitarian aviation services.

During the press conference, Regent Yahuli also expressed appreciation to all personnel involved in the evacuation of Captain Nicholas's body from Balinggama Village to Timika.

"We sincerely thank the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the Joint Regional Defense Command III (Pangkogabwilhan III), the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Command, the Papua Regional Police, the local government, and everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure the evacuation was carried out safely and successfully," he stated.

The Regent also conveyed his apologies to the bereaved family, the Associated Mission Aviation (AMA) Foundation, the Diocese of Jayapura, and the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia for the tragic incident that occurred within Yahukimo Regency.

According to Regent Yahuli, the incident has significantly affected public services in Yahukimo, where air transportation is the primary means of delivering logistics, healthcare, education, and essential supplies to remote mountain communities.

"Most remote areas of Yahukimo can only be accessed by air. Therefore, this tragedy will inevitably impact humanitarian services that rely heavily on Pilatus and Caravan aircraft operating in the region," he explained.

As a mark of respect for Captain Nicholas, the Yahukimo Regency Government declared three days of official mourning, beginning Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The Regent also called on all residents of Yahukimo to pray for Captain Nicholas and to maintain peace, security, and harmony throughout the regency. He encouraged every church in Yahukimo to hold special prayer services during the mourning period as a symbol of solidarity and appreciation for the pilot's humanitarian service.

Furthermore, the Yahukimo Regency Government expressed hope that this tragic event would serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding security and creating a peaceful environment to ensure the continuity of humanitarian assistance, healthcare, education, and regional development across Papua Highlands.

Concluding his statement, Regent Didimus Yahuli urged law enforcement authorities to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the incident in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Indonesia.
