TPNPB Reports Two Civilians Killed in Kenyam, Calls for Independent and International Investigation

Reported Civilian Shootings in Kenyam, Nduga Regency, Papua Pegunungan, October 24, 2026.

KENYAM, OLEMAH.COM — The Central Command of the National Committee of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), associated with the Free Papua Movement (OPM), has reported an alleged shooting of civilians in Kenyam, Nduga Regency, Papua Pegunungan Province. In a press release dated Saturday, October 24, 2026, the organization said two civilians had died, one person had sustained serious gunshot wounds, and six other residents had reportedly been detained.

The information came from a press release delivered through TPNPB-OPM spokesperson Sebby Sambom. At the time this article was prepared, Olemah.com had not independently verified the reported sequence of events, the victims’ identities, or the alleged detentions.

Timeline of Events According to the TPNPB Statement

According to a report attributed to the TPNPB Sector Intelligence Forces (PIS) in Kenyam, the incident allegedly occurred between approximately 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. local time in Yosoma Village, Kenyam District.

In the press release, TPNPB alleged that Indonesian military personnel conducted aerial surveillance using drones before moving toward an area where several residents were carrying out activities around their homes.

The statement said three residents were near a house and carrying tools used for gardening or hunting, including machetes, bows, and an air rifle. TPNPB then claimed that a shooting occurred, killing two people and injuring another.

This account remains a statement from one party. Olemah.com has not received an official statement from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) or the Indonesian National Police (Polri) confirming or explaining the alleged operation and shooting.

Three Victims Reportedly From Yosoma Village

In its press release, TPNPB identified the two people reportedly killed as Helkia Kerebeya, 16, and Mazur Serera, 25.

Another resident, identified as Kaberak Karebeya, 16, was reportedly shot and left in critical condition. The statement said the injured person was receiving treatment at a hospital in Kenyam.

All three were identified in the statement as residents of Yosoma Village, Kenyam District, Nduga Regency. However, Olemah.com has not independently verified their identities, the reported condition of the injured person, or the location where treatment is being provided.

Information concerning the victims, particularly those who are minors, should be carefully verified with their families, medical personnel, and relevant authorities while respecting their privacy and protection.

Six Residents Reportedly Detained; Displacement Claims Require Verification

The same press release alleged that six civilians were detained following the incident. TPNPB claimed that the group included women and children and that they were taken to a military post for questioning.

The statement also described movements by security personnel using motorcycles and military trucks around Kenyam and toward Geyarek District. According to the report, the situation caused fear among residents, prompting some people to seek refuge in nearby forested areas.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. local time, relatives of the victims and other residents reportedly went to a military post to seek an explanation about the incident.

The reports of detentions, the whereabouts of the residents allegedly taken to the post, and possible displacement all require verification by relevant authorities. No official information has yet been obtained confirming the number of people detained, their locations, or their current conditions.

TPNPB Calls for UN and International Human Rights Investigation

Through the press release, the TPNPB Central Command called on the United Nations (UN), the UN Security Council, and international human rights organizations to conduct an independent investigation into the alleged shooting in Kenyam.

TPNPB also called for attention from the International Committee of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations to assist civilians affected by the conflict and address reports of displacement.

These requests reflect the position and demands expressed by TPNPB. The information available to Olemah.com does not indicate that the UN or any relevant international organization has received a specific mandate or decided to investigate this particular incident.

Papua Displacement Figures Cited by Human Rights Monitor

In its statement, TPNPB also cited a figure of 127,031 civilians reportedly displaced by military operations and armed conflict across Papua.

The figure appears in a Human Rights Monitor report published on September 7, 2026. The report stated that, as of the end of August 2026, more than 127,031 civilians across various regencies in Papua remained displaced due to military operations and armed conflict.

However, this figure concerns displacement across multiple areas and does not specifically establish how many people were displaced as a result of the reported Kenyam incident on October 24, 2026. Any direct connection between the reported incident and displacement in the area requires further verification.

Olemah.com Seeks Confirmation and Balanced Reporting

At the time this article was prepared, Olemah.com had not received an official statement from the TNI, Polri, the Nduga Regency Government, or the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) specifically confirming the reported shooting, the victims’ identities, the alleged detention of six residents, or conditions in Yosoma Village.

Olemah.com will continue seeking responses from the relevant parties so that the public can receive information that does not rely solely on one account.

If the alleged shooting of civilians is confirmed, the incident should be examined through an independent, transparent, and accountable investigation. The protection of civilians, clarification of the whereabouts of those reportedly detained, and access to information for affected families are important matters that warrant attention.
